Spark is looking for great writing that tells a compelling story, regardless of length. Laserbeam, is a good example of a very short story—just over words—that has an arc of interest, tension and resolution, while leaving many questions unaddressed and dramatic elements undeveloped.
For poetry, I also look for a story, but the story may be implied. Of course, there is a lot more flexibility for poetry, and some styles tend to emphasize descriptive language over storytelling. Short Stories Short Stories up to 12, words will be considered.
More important than word count is the quality of your work: we are looking for excellent, polished writing that pulls us into an engaging story. Poetry Most forms are considered, both metered and unmetered, traditional and experimental. Poems from 3 to lines have the best chance of acceptance. You may submit up to three poems at a time, but a separate submission form must be completed for each poem.
We will award one Third Place prize for poetry, and one for prose. Each of the two Third Place winners will receive:. Entries are not required to adhere to this prompt, but you are encouraged to let it inspire your creativity. There are no age or genre restrictions for this contest, and content guidelines are similar to our standard submission guidelines , including what we are not accepting.
Prose includes both fiction and creative nonfiction, but we have not divided the category further because we believe that well-written creative nonfiction should tell a story so well that the result is indistinguishable from fiction. Prose must be less than 12, words.
Poetry includes all styles, meters, and rhyme schemes, or may be free-form. Poetry must be less than lines.
